2025 AP Exams: How Will They Work?

Find out if your exam is on the Bluebook testing app this year.

This year, 28 AP Exams will be given digitally in Bluebook. The digital AP Exams can be either fully digital or hybrid digital. For the remaining non-Bluebook AP Exams, the modes vary. Here’s an overview of the 2025 AP Exams. For more information about a specific course, you can review the course and exam pages.

Fully Digital AP Exam Subjects

The following 16 AP subjects will have fully digital exams. You’ll complete multiple-choice and free-response questions in Bluebook, with all responses automatically submitted at the end of the exam.

  • AP African American Studies (this exam is only available in U.S. schools)
  • AP Art History
  • AP Comparative Government and Politics
  • AP Computer Science A
  • AP Computer Science Principles*
  • AP English Language and Composition
  • AP English Literature and Composition
  • AP Environmental Science
  • AP European History
  • AP Human Geography
  • AP Latin
  • AP Psychology
  • AP Seminar*
  • AP United States Government and Politics
  • AP United States History
  • AP World History: Modern

*Note: For AP Computer Science Principles and AP Seminar, you’ll complete the end-of-course exam in Bluebook, and you’ll also submit your performance tasks through the AP Digital Portfolio for scoring.

Hybrid Digital AP Exam Subjects

The following 12 AP subjects will have hybrid digital exams. You’ll complete multiple-choice questions and view free-response questions in Bluebook. You’ll handwrite your free-response answers in paper exam booklets.

  • AP Calculus AB
  • AP Calculus BC
  • AP Chemistry
  • AP Macroeconomics
  • AP Microeconomics
  • AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based
  • AP Physics 2: Algebra-Based
  • AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism
  • AP Physics C: Mechanics
  • AP Precalculus
  • AP Statistics

Other AP Exams (non-Bluebook)

For the following AP subjects, you won’t take the exam in Bluebook. Below is a summary of these exams.

AP Art and Design (2-D, 3-D, Drawing)

You’ll submit all work (three portfolio components) for scoring through the AP Digital Portfolio.

AP Chinese Language and Culture, AP Japanese Language and Culture

These exams are administered on school-owned and -controlled devices through a separate exam application (not Bluebook). 

AP French Language and Culture, AP German Language and Culture, AP Italian Language and Culture, AP Spanish Language and Culture

In these exams, you’ll complete the multiple-choice and written free-response sections on paper, and you’ll record your spoken free response on a device supplied by the testing school.

AP Music Theory

In this exam, you’ll complete the multiple-choice and written free-response sections on paper, and you’ll record your sight-singing free response on a device supplied by the testing school.

AP Research

There’s no end-of-course written exam for AP Research. Instead, you’ll be assessed on performance tasks you complete that are based on your yearlong research project: an academic paper (which you’ll submit for scoring through the AP Digital Portfolio), a presentation, and an oral defense of your research.

AP Spanish Literature and Culture

In this exam, you’ll complete the multiple-choice and free-response sections on paper.

Here are some ways you can get familiar with the Bluebook app.

  • Download Bluebook and start exploring the app. 
  • Try a test preview in Bluebook. Test previews are available now for select AP subjects and will be available for all digital AP Exams later in the year.  
  • Try practice assessments from your teacher in AP Classroom. The AP Classroom testing experience continues to be updated to closely match Bluebook. With these updates, you can become familiar with the tools and features you’ll use on exam day.
